My journey with Capture One Pro started because I wanted to have more different looks available than what I had in my Fujifilm camera.
The film simulations available in Fuji cameras are very beautiful and very “finished”. What I mean with finished is that they are balanced in appearance and thus appeal to wide audience and they don’t look like gimmicks as many “filters” do. They also set a very high standard for my kind of people who wants to make own styles with Capture One.
I have most of my photography life depended upon the single look that was available. In film times You could choose from many different looks but when the digital era started I always had one look in my camera. I practically very seldom used some post processing program. My favorite look was Canon look (and thus bought Canon cameras) as it appealed my eye, but in the end I was stuck with that look. When I chose Fujifilm camera I finally was able to choose from different looks that were baked in. But the appetite growed immediately. I tweaked the film simulations endlessly to see if they could be used to have “my own look”. I got some nice ideas and inspiration from people like Kevin Mullins and Ritchie Roesch, who I thank for their time given to the community of Fujifilm camera users by sharing their in-camera settings.
Using Capture One Pro (Fujifilm) I have managed to tweak many looks that I like. I admit that I got a bit addicted to the process of creating styles. And now I have a problem with so many different styles as I see so many of them suit a certain photo. And choosing only one style for a photo feels so limiting. 🙂
So far I have made with Capture One all the looks (styles) I wanted to make when I started paying of the Pro version. My idea was that I could tweak styles that work with the free Capture One Express Fujifilm in case I would stop paying for the Pro version. Then I got an idea that I would share my styles so that people having the Express version could get more free styles available. Especially I wanted to make some styles that would be based on Fujifilm film simulations and look similar as for example the “Padilla” -look by Kevin Mullins. I though soon skipped mimicking others styles as I had my hands full of work with my own ideas. But the ideas didn’t end with my first styles and now I have made quite a lot styles for my usage.
So, what styles I like most?
From the beginning I named my styles individually. I think no one likes a bunch of styles that have only number in their names. With individual names I can remember what the style is about, what kind of look is the aim of the style. And most of my styles are the products of long process testing the look with all kinds of photos and they take many many hours to complete. So I appreciate the styles so much that I want to emphasize every one of them. It is another question if the finished look appeals anyone else but me.
All the styles so far made are done in Capture One version 12. I yet don’t have experience if the styles made with the current version 20 differ anyway from the previous version but I decided to make a collection of my styles so far in one package here and if I make new styles with the version 20 I’ll offer them separately. The collection of styles include all the current versions that I find usable for myself (and thus feel they are still worth sharing). I left away some versions I don’t find useful anymore.
If You are interested to hear what are my favorites they are the following:
- DoubleA BW. This style was born as a study of how I could use low contrast to create nice portrait photos in black and white. The look reminded Kodak Double X movie film converted for still photography. My other version of this, DoubleD, looked a bit more precisely like Double X, but the DoubleA with it’s tones were the favorite of mine in the end. This style seems to work with any photos, were it portrait, nature, landscape, architecture, street, flowers or abstract urban genre. I have got used to it’s strong grain and see it important part of the look (though I made couple of versions with lower grain). This kind of style is very much the opposite of the contrasty looks I see all around the net. I know there are others like me that like the wide tonality of this style, but even if You haven’t thought it before, try this. I have an album made with this style so check it out here. One interesting comment I received from my work colleague (our work has nothing to do with arts or photography) was that the photos with this style look like they had color. 🙂
- K14. This style was my first attempt at achieving the look of “Kodachrome”. Not actually any kind of replication of the film itself, but more like replication of some aesthetics related to the film. I haven’t had success trying to like the Fujifilm Classic Chrome film simulation. I just don’t get it to fit me well. K14 -style was meant to replace that film simulation and even though it is a simple play with curves and color tones it looks gorgeous to me. You can find my photos with this style here.
- VintageK. This style grew along other styles and has more closely a look I relate to Kodachrome era, but with my own touch and vision. The colors and contrasts work well to give the photo “old” look. After long time testing this I really have fallen in love with the look. I highly recommend trying it. Here are some photos processed with this style. I personally use the tGrain -version of this style as the grain really adds to the athmosphere You get with this style.
- PrimeColor. This is, as the name implies, my primary colorscape I like. I highly recommend trying it for different photos and see if You like it too. The PrimeColorFilm CT grainy -style is an attempt to make a “analogue” film look with this PrimeColor -style and I like it too.

My in-camera film simulation settings were also due to change as I wanted to create WYSIWYG -look of my favorite styles in-camera. Now my settings are the following:
- Velvia: DR100, FilmSimulation Velvia, GrainEffect OFF, White Balance AUTO (WB shift R0 B-1), HighlightTone 0, ShadowTone -1, Color +2, Sharpness +2, Noise Reduction -4.
- ProNegHigh: DR100, FilmSimulation ProNegHigh, GrainEffect OFF, White Balance AUTO (WB shift R0 B-1), HighlightTone 0, ShadowTone -1, Color +2, Sharpness +1, Noise Reduction -2.
- K14 (mimicking the K14 Capture One -style): DR100, FilmSimulation ClassicChrome, GrainEffect WEAK, White Balance AUTO (WB shift R0 B-2), HighlightTone -1, ShadowTone 0, Color 0, Sharpness +3, Noise Reduction -4.
- VintageK (mimicking the VintageK Capture One -style): DR 100, FilmSimulation ProNegHigh, GrainEffect WEAK, WhiteBalance AUTO (WB shift R3 B-2), HighlightTone +1, ShadowTone 0, Color -4, Sharpness -4, Noise Reduction -4.
- VisionFilm500Daylight (mimicking the VisionFilm 500 Daylight Capture One -style): DR 200, FilmSimulation ProNegStd, GrainEffect WEAK, WhiteBalance AUTO (WB shift R0 B-3), HighlightTone 0, ShadowTone -2, Color 0, Sharpness -1, Noise Reduction -4.
- DoubleA (mimicking the DoubleA Capture One -style): DR 200, FilmSimulation Acros, GrainEffect OFF, WhiteBalance AUTO (WB shift R0 B0), HighlightTone -2, ShadowTone -1, Color N/A, Sharpness -1, Noise Reduction -4.
